A
Proper Job A
family relative once commented to Des Shepherd that he had never had a
'proper job'. But what is a 'proper job'?
Is
it a job where you start after leaving school and stay with it until
retirement, such as a career in the Civil Service? Or a corporate
company such as a bank? Or possibly in a profession such as teaching or
the police force? In
recent years there has been a change. Job security is largely a thing of
the past. It is likely that the average adult can expect to change jobs
(and even careers) multiple times over their working life.
When
he was younger Des said he wanted to work in radio, He was told it
wasn't a 'proper job'. But looking back through his working life he
feels he has achieved something. He set up his own businesses and
pursued what he was passionate about (quality radio training amongst
other things). His
work has taken him across the UK, parts of Europe and as far as the
Falkland Islands. This account of his working life spans over 50 years
and relates his trials & tribulations and disappointments, but also
moments of extreme satisfaction. It tells the story of being
short-listed for a prestigious education award, arrested by Surrey
Police and meeting a gangster who spent over 40 years in prison for
murder and other violent crimes. The RRP for this book is £10.99 plus postage and packing. However if ordered direct from the author, it is available at a discount price of £9.50 inc p and p (second class Royal Mail to UK address)
